Recently Moved In Geogria?

A guide for Georgia voters who have recently changed counties and still want to participate in the primary election.

Last updated: April 13, 2026

Life happens. People move. Deadlines sneak up.

If you moved from one Georgia county to another and missed the voter registration deadline in your new county, you may still have a path to participate. That path depends on when you moved and where you are trying to vote.

Georgia has specific rules for voters who move close to an election. Those rules may still give you options.

College students who relocate at the end of a semester are a common example. So are professionals who move for a new job right before the deadline.

We created this FAQ to help you.

  • It depends on when you moved.

If you moved on or after April 19, 2026, you likely still have a path to vote. Keep reading.

If you moved before April 19, 2026 and did not update your registration by the April 20 deadline, you cannot vote in the May 19 primary. Skip to the last question. There is still something you can do.

  • That depends on where you moved.

If you moved within the same county, go to your old polling place. Tell a poll worker you moved and fill out a change of address card when you get there. That is all you need to do.

If you moved to a new county, go back to your old county and vote there. Find your old polling place at mvp.sos.ga.gov.

  • No. If you are not yet registered in your new county, your vote will not count there. Even a provisional ballot will not help in this situation. You will need to travel back to your old county to vote.

  • You can request an absentee ballot from your former county instead. No excuse needed. Any registered Georgia voter can request one.

The fastest way is online at securemyabsenteeballot.sos.ga.gov. You can also apply by email, mail, fax, or in person at your former county's Board of Registrars office. You will need your Georgia driver's license number or state ID number to apply.

The deadline to request an absentee ballot for the 2026 Georgia primary is May 8. Do not wait. The sooner you request it, the more time you have to receive it, vote it, and get it back. Your completed ballot must be received by your former county's elections office by 7 p.m. on Election Day.

  • If you moved more than 30 days ago and missed the April 20 registration deadline, you cannot vote in the May 19 primary. That is the honest answer.

But do not stop there. Register in your new county today at mvp.sos.ga.gov and you will be ready for the November 3 general election. That registration deadline is October 5.
